4th Street S Bicycle Lane Project
Update May 20th 2008
Construction on the Bike Lane Project has begun with moving utility poles, construction will increase through Summer 2008; Project has been classified as a “resurfacing project” with installation of 4 foot Bike Lanes on each side of 4Th Street South. Some areas (with the deep ditches) will have 8ft of new Bike Lane on one side of 4TH Street South. Residents concerns about poor drainage on 4th Street South are being reported to City officials.
Update January 4th 2008
We checked the status of the project and have been informed that the design became more complicated that expected. The 60% design has been sent to the DOT in December. As soon as the DOT comments are received, the City will submit the 100% design. If the DOT approval is received promply, construction may start as early as April 2008.
We asked the City to provide us with a copy of the final design before construction starts.
PROJECT
In May 2008, the City Council approved a plan to construct 1.6 miles of bicycle lanes along 4th Street S, from Pinellas Point Drive S to 45th Avenue S. The intent of this project was to increase the existing 22 feet pavement width by 8 to 10 feet to incorporate a 4 feet wide dedicated bicycle lane in each direction.
It was anticipated that the oak trees along the east side of 4th Street S from Pinellas Point Drive to Colony Point Drive S will need to be replaced with new trees located behind the sidewalk.
The project survey work is underway and detailed design scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2007. The re-stripping and re-surfacing of the roadway was tentatively planned for the end of 2007.
The plan for this project was presented by Mike Frederick, Manager of Neighborhood Transportation during our General Meeting May 15th 2007.
